What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Both aim to support personal growth and emotional health, but can differ in depth and focus.
Counselling typically focuses on helping people navigate current life challenges, offering support and guidance to improve well-being. It can be short-term (as few as 6 x sessions) and issue-specific.
Psychotherapy usually goes deeper, exploring longstanding patterns, emotional difficulties, and past experiences to create lasting change. It tends to be more intensive and long-term.
It’s not uncommon for sessions to be a mixture of the two. I tailor your sessions to suit your individual needs and we review our progress regularly.
What happens after I get in touch or send a message?
I’ll reply to you within 3 working days (check your spam folder if you haven’t heard back). We’ll find a time that works for you to have a free initial 20 minute chat (either by phone or video call) about what’s going on for you and how I could help you. If, after that, you’d like to try therapy, we’ll get you booked in for a full session.
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
That’s what the free initial chat is for. It gives you the space and time to ask questions, get to know me and for me to understand you a little better. There’s no pressure!
What if I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t work?
Then you’ve been brave to be here reading this and giving it another try!
Every therapist and type of therapy or counselling is different. What works for some might not work for others. I was a client before I was a therapist and I know that finding the right person to open up to can be really hard.
I’ll be open and transparent from the start about how I work and support you in giving it a go to see if it’s right for you. I’m not here to fix you, I’m here to understand you.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on what you’d like to work on. The first session will be about exploring what’s troubling you and how we could work on that together. Then we’ll decide how to move forward and what that looks like.
Everyone is different, so sessions will be tailored to suit your needs and your unique experiences.
I offer both short and long-term therapy (see the differences between counselling & psychotherapy section above).
What kind of things do you support with?
I have extensive experience in supporting people with various things including: anxiety, low mood, depression, stress, trauma, life-changing events, grief and bereavement, personal relationships, family issues, sexuality, gender identity, mental health struggles, illness, chronic conditions, loneliness, menopause, work-related issues, addiction and substance use and many more.
What if I don’t know what to say?
That’s ok! Sometimes we start therapy not knowing what to say or how it might go. My job is to help you work out what’s happening for you right now and support you in opening up about it.
It’s normal to feel nervous, anxious or on edge about reaching out for help. It can feel really scary.
You’ve already taken the first step by just being here and reading this – I’m here to help you take the next one.
Do I need a diagnosis to come to therapy?
No. Anyone can come to therapy.
I’m not a clinician and will not diagnose you. I’ve worked in the mental health sector for many years and understand the complexity and depth of mental health challenges. I’m experienced in working with various types of diagnosis.
If you have a diagnosis and want to share it you’re welcome to, but there is no pressure to disclose and I will take you as you come.
My passion lies in helping you realise your potential and embrace your authentic self.
Will what I say be confidential? Do you store my data?
What you say in our sessions stays between us. There is an exception to this: if I feel you’re at serious risk to yourself or others, I’ll need to discuss with you my concerns and work out a way forward to support you safely. I’ll also discuss this with my qualified BACP clinical supervisor, to ensure I’m providing the best support I can for you.
We’ll complete a client/therapist contract before starting sessions to ensure protection and expectations for both of us.
I ask for only minimal data. I’ll send you a short form to complete after our free initial chat so I can collect your basic information (like contact details to arrange our sessions) and store this securely within encrypted software. I never sell or share your data with anyone. I am registered with the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) and have a GDPR policy.
Do you provide therapy for student counselling trainees?
Absolutely! I was once a trainee and understand the importance of having my own therapy while I studied. I also know that it can be an expensive time, that’s why I offer a discounted rate for student trainees.
How do I pay you for sessions?
I take payment via BACS or PayPal. I will share the information on how to do this at the time of booking.
